Random Musings

Imagine that the person you love most in this world suddenly got a severe brain injury that has impaired their ability to do...well, just about everything. They can't do much more than look around, scream, and thrash a bit.  And for some crazy reason, you've elected to care for them, day and night. Weeks go by with no real change.  You get no positive reinforcement from this person except the brief moments when they don't seem completely miserable.  You're hardly getting any sleep but still there's nowhere else you'd rather be.  You love this person to bits and taking care them is what keeps you going.  You talk to them and read to them as if they can understand you but part of you worries that they'll never understand, that they'll be this way forever.

One day, you're talking to them as usual, not really expecting anything but you notice that they're looking intently at you.  Suddenly, a smile breaks out on their face...and it is the most beautiful, the most amazing thing in the world.  Not because there's anything particularly unique about the way the smile looks but because of what it means: this person recognizes you, is delighted by what you're doing, and is able to interact positively with you. It's the same whenever they regain the ability to do anything from there on out.  When they laugh, it's the most beautiful sound in the world because it means that they can laugh.

It's probably become pretty obvious that this is an analogy to raising a baby.  This morning I was thinking about my brother Chris and how he'd gotten a pretty severe head injury about 10 years ago.  I certainly wasn't caring for him day and night but I did visit him in the hospital regularly.  It is such a terrifying feeling to know that while this person I loved was still alive, he could be lost to me forever. One day I was visiting while his occupational therapist was working with him.  She asked him who I was and he answered in a completely casual tone, "that's my sister, Laura."  It was amazing.  I haven't felt anything like it since, until I had a baby.

Of course it's not a perfect analogy.  Maybe not even a good one since one involves a tragedy and rediscovery and the other one is simply discovery.  But not too long ago, I really didn't get why parents are so universally amazed by the seemingly mundane things that their kids do. Now I feel like maybe there are no ordinary, mundane things.  There are only a whole bunch of extraordinary things, made all the more special because I can remember a time when any given thing that my child can do was impossible to him.  Nothing should be taken for granted.  Especially since it's impossible to know how much time we've got with the ones we love.  It's one of those things that we all know intellectually but it's so hard to retain the knowledge viscerally. Maybe it's the reason for all those cliches out there; having all sorts of happy, trite reminders frees us from the burden of constantly carrying such heavy knowledge.

Oh dear.  As usual, I've gotten a bit tangential. Okay, so, the point.  The point is that this Father's Day has got me thinking about parenthood in general. I feel like it should go without saying what an awesome dad Ryan is to Bears but I guess I'd better mention it anyway.  I'm so glad that I get to be with someone who's not only an awesome husband but who also shares my obsession with the little cub we're raising.  Bears lights up whenever he sees his daddy and it's so cute to watch them play together.  Ryan works long hours every day making it so that every day I get to stay home and play with our baby.  Parenting is incredible and I'm so, so glad that I get to do it as a team instead of alone.  What a daunting idea.

Happy Father's Day!

...to some pretty awesome dads and grandpas.

Silly Fail

We recently had our Anderson family picture taken by my sister-in-law, Kristen.  Of course, we had to do one silly shot because...well, that just seems to be the thing to do with group photos.  Maybe it's a Utah thing, I don't know.

Pretty typical, right? Everyone's doing their best to look adorably daft.  Or are they?

Let's take a closer look...

(it might help to know that Katie dog is slightly suicidal under normal circumstances)

Be Bear Aware

Finally, somebody gets it. It's very important to be aware of Bears and have food storage readily available for when he gets hungry.

We just got back from Yellowstone and it was a pretty action packed adventure. This was the first time I'd been up there so early in the year.  That added to the insane amounts of precipitation that this area's been getting this year made for a very soggy/snowy yellowstone.  The lower elevation areas were actually flooded. Bears is very pensive in the picture below because what appears to be a lake with trees growing out of it is actually supposed to be a meadow.
And then a buffalo by the road gave him quite a fright.
He was much more comfortable around the friendly local elk.
...and sippin on cokes with aunts Tanya and Jessica
Uncle Bottoo was pretty into the nintendos

Bears thought that Castle geyser was great fun to nap to.
Hanging out with the local bears
Checking out some hot springs

Lookin at waterfalls
Apparently I'm really embarrassing in this picture.
Surface of the moon
checkin out thermal features
playin in the dirt
The end!

Park Adventures...and Too Much Dr Who

I was looking at this picture trying to think of an appropriate caption but it kept eluding me because Dr Who kept popping in my head.  It's a british show that features this time traveller dude who's always got an attractive female companion with him and they travel through space and time on crazy adventures.  Which is clearly what Bears and Kins are doing up there.

See the resemblance?  No?  Well, like I said, we've been watching a bit too much dr who so I may have lost some perspective.
Bear cub looking out of his time machine before venturing out.

These outside pictures were taken from Tess' phone.  Pretty impressive for a phone camera.

It's Important to Look Your Best

At least that's what Bears kept saying as he donned my curler cap and wielded the dog shampoo spritzer.  Okay...the curler cap may have actually been Ryan's doing.
Earlier that day, we had an action packed time of dancing to the beat of the washing machine, navigating the stairs, and practicing saying words.

Happy Mother's Day

About a week ago, Bears waddled up to me holding a crumpled piece of paper.  He often likes to sort through this drawer that's full of old paperwork, logs, and charts so I didn't think much of it until I looked closely and saw exactly what it was.

It was the log of the day that I found out I was pregnant with him: august 6th 2009. One of the best days of my life up until that point. What a perfect Mother's Day card.

The Power of Observation...

...is sadly a power I do not possess.  Bears and I were walking back from a trek to the local fancy hippie market when suddenly I decided to cross the street.  Well, not suddenly per se, since we were at the appropriate intersection and I had been waiting a minute or two for the right time.  But for the sake of a riveting story, I'll stick with it.  There we were, rashly crossing the street...

...when I noticed that we also had to cross in the other direction in order to get to our destination.  After again waiting for the appropriate time, we boldly headed out.

This is when my limited observational powers came into play.  I noticed that I couldn't continue going in a straight line because there was a car in the way.  I idly wondered what a car was doing out in the middle of the intersection but kept plowing ahead.  When I brushed past it, I noticed that it was a bit jagged and crumpled.  And also that there were a couple of other crumpled cars mashed into it.  That's when I realized that there had been some sort of accident.  The cars involved looked pretty mutilated but luckily no one seemed injured.

Now in my defense, I was wearing my new sweet action jogging shoes.  As you may have noticed, they're blindingly glorious and very distracting.

Peekaboo Bears!

Lately he's been really into initiating peekaboo games.  And also staring off into space and making squeaky noises apparently.  And random cackling has been a hit as well. I think I already posted the part with him dancing to "little red caboose" but I couldn't help but put it in again for some reason.

The last couple of days he's just done away with peekaboo altogether in favor of just ducking down and then shooting back up all the time, whether he's ducking behind something or just standing in the middle of a room.  And he's learned what "arms up!" means and will excitedly throw his arms into the air.  This can be somewhat detrimental to his balance when he happens to be toddling along when the urge to throw his arms up strikes him.
